CHAPTER 22

Gran drew herself up a little. “My name is Vesta Muffin, and I’m the leader of the neighborhood watch. We’ve been following the events as they’ve unfolded with rising concern, and according to my information, you know more about the people responsible for the terrible epidemic that’s been spreading like wildfire.”

“Who told you?” asked the man curtly, not so easily lured into revealing all.

“Linwood Catling. He works as an engineer at the water plant. He told us you tried to warn them about a consortium taking over the plant earlier this year.”

“That’s correct,” said the man. “And in the meantime, they have taken over.”

“I know. We were at the plant just now,” said Gran, giving her associates a nod, indicating she felt the conversation was heading in the right direction. “So what can you tell us about this consortium, Mr. Vincent? Do you think they’re responsible for the disease that’s plaguing Hampton Cove?”

“I’m sorry, but I’m not prepared to discuss this over the phone,” said the man.

“Can we meet?” she asked. When he didn’t respond, she added, “My daughter, her husband, my son and his wife, my granddaughter and her husband—they’re all in the hospital right now, so if you have any information that can shed light on this dreadful business, I want to hear it.”

After a long pause, he said, “All right. But no police.”

“It’ll just be me and the other members of the watch,” she assured the man. And seven assorted cats—but he didn’t need to know that.

When he gave her the address, we all looked up. It was Blake’s field!

After Gran hung up, she tapped her phone against her chin. “This guy is extremely coy. When we meet, we’ll have to make sure we don’t spook him, or we’ll never see or hear from him again. So let’s do as he says and keep the cops out of this, all right?”

“Fine with me,” said Scarlett.

“I don’t know,” said Father Reilly, looking concerned. “When a man says he doesn’t want to involve the police, it automatically makes me suspicious about his motives. Why no police? And why all the secrecy?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” asked Gran. “Because the people behind this whole business are extremely powerful—no doubt they’re capable of making any investigation into their business affairs go away. They must have judges, cops, politicians on the payroll. Everything to make sure things go smoothly for them.”

Her words were certainly cause for great concern, and for a moment no one spoke. Then all of a sudden, we heard the sound of a plane overhead, and a rain shower drenched the car, causing the windshield wipers to automatically activate and go into overdrive.

“What was that?!” Wilbur cried.

“Now I’ve had it,” said Gran. “Overflying planes and sudden rain showers—this can’t be a coincidence.” And so she pointed at the overflying plane, which was of the smallish crop duster variety. “Follow that plane!” And since she was the one behind the wheel of the car, she immediately started the engine, and moments
