CHAPTER 22
Gran drew herself up a little. âMy name is Vesta Muffin, and Iâm the leader of the neighborhood watch. Weâve been following the events as theyâve unfolded with rising concern, and according to my information, you know more about the people responsible for the terrible epidemic thatâs been spreading like wildfire.â
âWho told you?â asked the man curtly, not so easily lured into revealing all.
âLinwood Catling. He works as an engineer at the water plant. He told us you tried to warn them about a consortium taking over the plant earlier this year.â
âThatâs correct,â said the man. âAnd in the meantime, they have taken over.â
âI know. We were at the plant just now,â said Gran, giving her associates a nod, indicating she felt the conversation was heading in the right direction. âSo what can you tell us about this consortium, Mr. Vincent? Do you think theyâre responsible for the disease thatâs plaguing Hampton Cove?â
âIâm sorry, but Iâm not prepared to discuss this over the phone,â said the man.
âCan we meet?â she asked. When he didnât respond, she added, âMy daughter, her husband, my son and his wife, my granddaughter and her husbandâtheyâre all in the hospital right now, so if you have any information that can shed light on this dreadful business, I want to hear it.â
After a long pause, he said, âAll right. But no police.â
âItâll just be me and the other members of the watch,â she assured the man. And seven assorted catsâbut he didnât need to know that.
When he gave her the address, we all looked up. It was Blakeâs field!
After Gran hung up, she tapped her phone against her chin. âThis guy is extremely coy. When we meet, weâll have to make sure we donât spook him, or weâll never see or hear from him again. So letâs do as he says and keep the cops out of this, all right?â
âFine with me,â said Scarlett.
âI donât know,â said Father Reilly, looking concerned. âWhen a man says he doesnât want to involve the police, it automatically makes me suspicious about his motives. Why no police? And why all the secrecy?â
âIsnât it obvious?â asked Gran. âBecause the people behind this whole business are extremely powerfulâno doubt theyâre capable of making any investigation into their business affairs go away. They must have judges, cops, politicians on the payroll. Everything to make sure things go smoothly for them.â
Her words were certainly cause for great concern, and for a moment no one spoke. Then all of a sudden, we heard the sound of a plane overhead, and a rain shower drenched the car, causing the windshield wipers to automatically activate and go into overdrive.
âWhat was that?!â Wilbur cried.
âNow Iâve had it,â said Gran. âOverflying planes and sudden rain showersâthis canât be a coincidence.â And so she pointed at the overflying plane, which was of the smallish crop duster variety. âFollow that plane!â And since she was the one behind the wheel of the car, she immediately started the engine, and moments
